As part of the award-winning environmental program at our gypsum wallboard plant in Silver Grove, Ky., Lafarge employees started a wildlife habitat committee dedicated to initiating projects such as the installation of nesting sanctuaries for purple martins, raptors, waterfowl and even bats. The committee has also undertaken activities such as planting scenic wildflower fields and restoring a wetlands area that had been used as a dumping ground by previous property owners. In 2004, the plant added a state-of-the-art storage facility that prevents synthetic gypsum from becoming airborne and impacting the plant's neighbors or the environment. It was for all of these extraordinary efforts that in 2005 the World Habitat Council awarded its prestigious certification to the plant’s wildlife management program.
